After two years of construction, the project of Van Don International Airport has been accomplished since July, 2018. This private airport has a total investment capital of more than VND7,400 billion and operates under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.

It is an international airport, serving both civil and military flights with a 3.6km long runway, according to Decision No.497/QD-BGTVT on March 15, 2018 by the Ministry of Transport.

The airport is expected to become operational on December 30 with nine air routes and capable of serving around 7,000 passengers per day and aims to welcome 2.5 million passengers by 2020 and 5 million by 2030.

The Van Don airport plays a vital role in bolstering the zone’s investment climate and tourism development as Quang Ninh is also home to the World Natural Heritage site of Ha Long Bay.

The project is invested by the domestic Sun Group - the owner of luxury resorts in Da Nang including Ba Na Hills and Son Tra Intercontinental Resort. The investor will also invest in an integrated casino and resort complex which are important components of Van Don Economic Zone.

Previously, Quang Ninh province showed a strong determination to speed up the construction pace of components in Van Don Economic Zone to drive socio-economic development not only in the province but also the Northern Key Economic Region.

Van Don Economic Zone is envisaged covering more than 2,000 square kilometers. It will be developed into a hub for commercial and financial centers, trade and logistics facilities, high-class tourism products, sea and air transport services, industry, clean and high-quality agricultural sector./.
