Addressing the ceremony, the chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Tuong Van, highlighted Quang Ninh’s constant reforestation and afforestation efforts to increase forest cover to 55% in 2020, higher than the national average level.
The afforestation movement has contributed to improving people's awareness of forest protection in economic development.

“This year's tree planting festival is kicked off as part of Quang Ninh's efforts in response to the Government’s programme on planting 1 billion trees by 2025”, he said. “Particularly, Quang Ninh targets to grow about 600,000 green trees of various types during this festival, or 1,5 times higher than the quantity recorded last year.” Those trees include large, indigenous and valuable ones with a view to developing large-scale tree plantations.
Therefore, he called upon all departments, localities and people in the province to raise awareness of tree plating and forest protection as well as join hands to maximize the effectiveness of these significant programs.
Nearly 500 officials, soliders and locals together planted approximately 8,500 green trees of various kinds.

On November 28, 1959, President Ho Chi Minh wrote an article which was published on Nhan dan (People) newspaper, stressing the significance of tree planting to each person, each family and the entire nation. It has since become an annual festival of the Vietnamese at the beginning of a Lunar New Year.
