If you’re looking to explore the wild beauty of Quang Ninh’s highlands, set your sights on 1,429-meter Cao Xiem peak, often called “the roof of Quang Ninh”. Every step along this journey reveals majestic scenery where nature and culture blend seamlessly, offering an unforgettable trekking experience.

Along the way, there are plenty of perfect spots to camp, rest, and relax with friends while taking in the stunning mid-mountain scenery.
The adventure begins at Ngan Meo Thuong hamlet, where a small trail gently winds along the hillside amid the tranquil sounds of the mountains and forests. The first half of the route has been paved, making it ideal even for beginner trekkers. The rest follows narrow local footpaths once used by villagers for forest walks and harvesting star anise, gradually leading you deep into the lush wilderness of Luc Hon.
The scent of anise here fills the air, mingling with the cool breeze from the pines. In winter, camellia blossoms blanket the forest in white, anise flowers bloom in vivid pink in summer, and the fragrance of ripe forest fruits perfumes the air in autumn. The higher you climb, the more the landscape transforms. Layers of forest and open fields unfold, each with its own charm and rhythm.
After the initial stretch, the trail opens into rolling pine hills. The ground is firm and dry, the breeze cool and fresh, a perfect spot to rest, pitch a tent, or simply take in the peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by birdsong and the rustling of pine needles, trekkers can relax, chat with friends, and enjoy a rare moment of stillness.
Continuing upward, the trail leads to a vast meadow where you’ll find the iconic “Lonely tree” - a signature landmark of the Cao Xiem trekking route. From here, the view stretches to the horizon, with natural rock terraces curling along the mountainsides like a miniature “Great wall” in the heart of the wilderness.
After about 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the summit of Cao Xiem, proudly known as “the roof of Quang Ninh”. At more than 1,400 meters above sea level, surrounded by drifting clouds, you’ll feel as if you could touch the sky. From this height, a stunning panorama opens up: endless green mountains, misty valleys, and the distant outline of Hai Son commune faintly visible through the fog.
Each visitor finds a different emotion here: pride in reaching the top, awe at the unspoiled beauty, or quiet reflection in the stillness of the borderland forest.
Beyond its natural grandeur, the journey also offers a glimpse into local life. Along the way, you might see traditional trinh tuong earthen houses of the Dao and Tay people, villagers carrying baskets of star anise, or the friendly smiles and greetings of locals that make the trek feel warm and welcoming.
It’s this harmony of nature, culture, and humanity that gives Cao Xiem trekking its special charm. More than just a climb, it’s a journey of discovery. The best time to visit is during the autumn and winter months, when the weather is cool, camellias bloom white across the hillsides, star anise trees burst into color, and the forests are alive with fragrance and light.
Luc Hon commune has been working with trekking tour operators to develop guided tours. Signposts have been installed, local guides trained, and villagers encouraged to offer transport and support services. This model aims to promote sustainable eco-tourism while preserving both forest resources and cultural heritage.
In October and November, trekkers can also combine the journey with visits to the Binh Lieu weekend market, Khe Van waterfall, or the autumn grass hills in full bloom.
Trekking Cao Xiem is not just a physical adventure, but a journey of the soul. Every step brings you closer to nature, to yourself, and to the serene rhythm of the mountains.
